Abstract

The Collatz conjecture is reframed as a discrete feedback control problem. The plant is the set of odd positive integers; the controller is the Syracuse map T(n) = (3n + 1)/2^k; the reference signal is the constant 1; and the feedback element is the +1 operation. The sign of this feedback — positive or negative — is shown to determine convergence completely. Negative feedback (3n + 1) routes every expansion class (S3) unconditionally into contraction classes (S5, S1), constituting a one-step error correction at every Syracuse iteration. Positive feedback (3n − 1) routes contraction classes back into expansion, producing the known cycles of that system. The Lyapunov function V = n/2^(Σk), proved strictly decreasing at every step, provides the formal stability certificate: no non-trivial periodic orbit exists. The transfer operator on odd residues mod 2^m has a unique eigenvalue λ = 1 with all other modes nilpotent for m = 3 through 9; the breathing pattern (non-trivial structure at m = 10 and m = 20 only, silence thereafter through m = 32) strongly supports the conjecture that this holds for all m. The convergence argument assembles these results in three logical steps whose interdependence is made explicit: (1) Lyapunov closes cycles — no periodic orbit can exist; (2) S-class chain analysis closes divergence — worst-case S7 chain expansion grows at most linearly in n, always overwhelmed by exponential contraction after forced routing through S3; (3) discreteness closes convergence — a trajectory that neither cycles nor diverges in a discrete well-ordered set must reach the unique fixed point 1. Steps (1), (3), and the routing results are unconditional. The structural matching and S-class chain arguments are conditional on spectral stability of the transfer operator for all m, which is the single remaining formal gap, now precisely identified. The 3n − 1 comparison is used throughout as a controlled experiment: same statistics, same plant, opposite routing, opposite outcome. The feedback sign is everything.
