Cooperative Overextension and Capacity-Grounding Failure: Cross-Locus Taxonomy Entries for AI Action Overclaim and Commitment Signaling Beyond Operative Capacity
Abstract
This deposit contains two linked taxonomy papers on cooperative overextension as a structurally important failure pattern in human–LLM interaction and adjacent institutional domains. The first paper, centered on capability-grounding failure under cooperative overextension, defines a model-primary failure mode in which an AI system emits helpful-seeming action offers that exceed verified executable scope, permission state, channel access, environment state, or mandate boundary. The second paper generalizes that structure into a broader cross-domain category, commitment signaling beyond operative capacity, in which a person, institution, or system recruits reliance through cooperative, restorative, or action-ready signals that are not yet grounded in actual operative capacity, authority, resources, coordination, or implementation pathway at the time of signaling. Together, the papers argue that AI exposes in compact form a broader trust-recruiting failure class already visible in institutions, public-service systems, policy implementation, organizational settings, and interpersonal repair. Both papers are written within a mechanism-first, cross-locus taxonomy architecture and are intended as portable, falsifiable classification entries for governance, evaluation, and human–LLM interaction research.
