Abstract

Four Modes of Black Hole Behavior: A State-Based Classification Framework Abstract Black holes exhibit a wide range of observable behaviors—from gravitational silence to themost luminous phenomena in the universe—yet no single, coherent taxonomy unifies thisdiversity across mass scales and observational regimes. This paper proposes a state-basedclassification framework organizing black hole behavior into four physically motivatedmodes: Mode I (Quiescent / Gravity-Dominant), Mode II (Accretion-Dominant / Radiative),Mode III (Magnetically Regulated / Jet-Dominant), and Mode IV (Transitional / Disruptive). The framework is built entirely on established physics—general relativity, magnetohydrodynamics, and accretion theory—and is grounded in a quantitativeparameter space defined by the Eddington ratio, dimensionless magnetic flux, and avariability metric. Each mode is mapped to canonical examples at both supermassive andstellar-mass scales, demonstrating that the classification is state-dependent, not objectdependent. Cross-mode transitions are physically motivated and observationallydocumented. The framework offers immediate utility for observational interpretation, simulation contextualization, and survey design. A final subsection examines what ModeI—taken to its logical limit as pure spacetime geometry—implies about black holeformation pathways, connecting the classification to the vacuum solutions of Einstein’sfield equations and raising questions that warrant systematic investigation
