Beyond Halal Labels: Premature Category Stabilization in Muslim-Friendly Tourism
Abstract
Muslim-friendly tourism has expanded from a niche market concern into avisible strategic domain in global tourism and hospitality. Existing scholarshiphas established that halal-friendly attributes, Islamic destination features, andMuslim-compatible service provisions can influence destination choice, perceivedvalue, and tourist satisfaction. At the same time, these visible assurances do notconsistently translate into stronger trust, conversion, revisit intention, or durablemarket performance across tourism settings. Although prior research also recognizesthat Muslim travelers are heterogeneous in religiosity, cultural background, trippurpose, family form, and service expectations, it has not yet sufficiently theorizedhow this diversity is interpreted and operationalized by tourism providers and policysystems. This article argues that a central source of underperformance lies inpremature category stabilization: the early reduction of diverse Muslim travelersinto rigid, provider-defined service categories. It proposes a mechanism in whichprovider-centered category projection shapes service templates, promise framing, and interactional conduct in ways that generate expectation mismatch, relationalmiscalibration, and trust erosion across the tourism journey. The article develops aconceptual framework linking symbolic assurance, operational coherence, segmentcalibrated readiness, and tourism trust formation. It concludes that destinations, firms, and policymakers should move beyond certification-first approaches towardreadiness-first, interaction-sensitive, and segment-specific models of Muslim-friendlytourism governance. Keywords: Muslim-friendly tourism; halal tourism; Islamic hospitality; service readiness;trust formation; destination governance
