Case Studies in Premature Explanatory Closure: Applying a Cross-Domain Diagnostic Framework to Cosmology, Evolution, AI, and Economics
Abstract
Scientific arguments often move from empirical observation through compatibility and sensitivity analysis toward explanatory conclusions. Across many disciplines, however, arguments transition prematurely from sensitivity results to explanatory closure without establishing the intermediate conditions required to justify that step. This paper forms part of the TOOLBOX_MASTER_v1_2 Methodology Series. This paper presents a domain-general diagnostic framework for identifying and evaluating premature explanatory closure in scientific arguments. The framework formalises four analytical tools: the Permissive–Purposive Distinction, the Anthropic Slide Test v2, the BC1–BC5 Bridge Framework, and the Typicality Trap.Together these tools form a five-step diagnostic protocol for evaluating explanatory claims and determining whether the bridge between sensitivity and explanation has been independently secured. The protocol is applied to four domains in which sensitivity results frequently give rise to explanatory overreach:• cosmological fine-tuning arguments• evolutionary optimisation claims• artificial intelligence capability forecasting• economic equilibrium modellingIn each case the empirical sensitivity results are generally well supported, while explanatory closure often relies on bridge components that remain unresolved or partially specified. The framework therefore distinguishes between three epistemic states:• completed explanations• conditional research programmes with explicit dependencies• premature explanatory closureThe framework does not adjudicate which scientific theories are ultimately correct. Instead it provides a structural method for identifying which explanatory bridge conditions have been independently secured and which remain open.By making these bridge requirements explicit, the protocol clarifies the difference between legitimate explanatory inference and premature explanatory closure across scientific disciplines. This paper builds on the methodological analysis introduced in:Diagnosing Fine-Tuning Arguments in Cosmology: A Structural Framework for Evaluating Anthropic and Multiverse ExplanationsDOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19078726Together with the preceding paper in the series — Premature Explanatory Closure: A Domain-General Diagnostic Framework for Scientific Arguments — the present work establishes a portable diagnostic protocol for evaluating explanatory arguments across scientific domains.
