Abstract

This technical concept paper describes a self-powered piezoelectric textile platform for continuous passive patient monitoring. The system integrates distributed piezoelectric sensing elements within standard fabric forms including bed sheets, garments, and seating surfaces to enable physiological monitoring without batteries, wiring, or active patient compliance. The platform harvests mechanical energy from patient movement, respiration, and cardiovascular pulse to power its operation while simultaneously generating sensing data. Detected physiological patterns include presence, movement, respiratory rate, cardiac proxy signals, and early sepsis risk indicators.A key architectural feature is a family-first notification hierarchy, where event-based alerts are delivered to family members prior to clinical escalation, providing reassurance without continuous surveillance. This document describes system architecture, application context, and use cases. Detailed signal processing methods, material optimisation parameters, and circuit-level implementation are reserved under patent protection. A provisional patent has been filed with IP Australia (March 2026) and PCT international filing is in progress. This disclosure establishes a public timestamp for the Care Fabric system while maintaining protection of underlying implementation methods.
