The Ontology of Time: The Sequence of Existence - Constraint Transitions, Causal Arrows and the Stratification of Time
Abstract
What is time? This document provides the constitutional answer within the Energy-Efficiency Theory framework. Time is not a ``fourth dimension'' of a pre-existing spacetime manifold, nor a merely psychological construct imposed upon a static reality. Time is the \textbf{sequential aspect of Existence}---the substrate's unstoppable operation is inherently sequential. This sequentiality is not ``temporality'' presupposing time; it is the structural fact that distinct energy transformations cannot all occur simultaneously for a finite system under Finite Actionability (L1 Constitutional Presupposition). From this constitutional seed, the complete architecture of time unfolds. Time is established as a \textbf{two-layer constitutional reality}. \textbf{L2 transient time} is the substrate's non-simultaneity itself---the bare sequentiality of Existence, present even in the $N=0$ vacuum where no persistent constraints exist. Its mathematical signature is the transient fluctuation spectrum of the vacuum (Vacuum v2.1, \S4). Transient time has no arrow: formation and meltdown of transient constraints are symmetric, producing zero net $C(t)$ accumulation. \textbf{L3 persistent time} is the partial order of Distinction events---formation events (creation of new constraint boundaries) and meltdown events (dissolution of existing boundaries) define the structural ``nodes'' of the partial order. Its mathematical signature is the Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG, Graph-Theoretic v3.0, \S XI). Causal direction is conferred by constraint dynamics: the structural asymmetry of formation (requiring directed investment of $A(t)$ to threshold $E_b^{\mathrm{form}}$) and meltdown (requiring only a thermal fluctuation at any existing boundary) establishes that formation precedes meltdown---causes precede effects---as a constitutional theorem (CND v4.0, \S III-B.4, CLOSED-in-EET). The \textbf{architecture of irreversibility} is derived through a complete constitutional chain: \textbf{non-simultaneity of substrate transformations} (derived from Energy Ontology and Finite Actionability, not presupposing ``time'') $\to$ \textbf{causal direction} (the structural formation/meltdown asymmetry) $\to$ \textbf{pipeline deposition} (causal inference events deposit pipeline unit-segments in the logical domain; accumulated wall thickness $W_{\mathrm{total}}$ is the irreversible trace of all past inferences, Logic v1.4) $\to$ \textbf{time} as the observed causal partial order. This chain eliminates the need for the Past Hypothesis---the unexplained low-entropy initial state of the universe---which is rendered unnecessary: causal asymmetry holds in any constraint network with $N_c \ge 1$, regardless of cosmological context. The \textbf{three arrows of time} are unified in a single constitutional framework. The entropic arrow (global, statistical, driven by Barrier-Diversity Competition), the plastic arrow ($dC/dt > 0$, local, per causal chain, CLOSED-in-EET, Inertia v3.4 Theorem I), and the cosmological arrow (global, driven by constraint leakage $\lambda_{\mathrm{leak}} > 0$) are three independent, mutually irreducible expressions of causal direction. The \textbf{measurement arrow} is identified not as an independent fourth arrow but as the unique joint manifestation of all three arrows in the observer's $\Pi_{\mathrm{capture}}$ operation: each measurement event simultaneously produces entropy, increases $C_O(t)$, and anchors causal direction. The \textbf{five-channel temporal structure} decomposes time's flow into the contributions of each constraint operation: Formation (time-creating: new causal chains enter the partial order), Meltdown (time-terminating: causal chains removed---yet the sole ``Janus-faced'' operation that simultaneously creates the past by irreversibly increasing $C(t)$), Maintenance (time-sustaining: preserves existing causal chains without creating new partial order nodes), Transient Event (non-structural temporal fluctuation: temporary causal connections without persistent traces), and Capture (time-consolidating: converts transient structures into persistent causal chains). The \textbf{temporal stratification theorem} ($\tau(L) \propto \exp(L^\delta/k_B T_{\mathrm{eff}})$, CLOSED-in-EET, Hierarchical Depth v3.1) establishes that time is stratified---each encapsulation layer possesses an independent characteristic timescale, and the depth of the accessible past differs across layers. The \textbf{observed time} is established through the complete operational chain of temporal perception: \textbf{Probe} (the observer actively sends free-state energy probes to the target) $\to$ \textbf{Truncate} ($\Pi_{\mathrm{trunc}}$ filters the returned spectrum) $\to$ \textbf{Capture} ($\Pi_{\mathrm{capture}}$ forms internal constraint records of specific Distinction events, creating observer-specific ``past'') $\to$ \textbf{Sink} ($\Pi_{\mathrm{sink}}$ deposits records into durable storage, forming pipeline unit-segments). The observer always observes the past---the finite propagation speed $v_{\max}$ and the discreteness of constraint transitions guarantee an irreducible observational delay of $2t_{\mathrm{prop}} + \tau_{\mathrm{response}}$. \textbf{Thirty of the deepest unsolved problems about time} receive systematic EET responses across physics (the origin of the arrow of time and the Past Hypothesis, closed timelike curves, Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory, Boltzmann Brains, the Page-Wootters mechanism, the thermal time hypothesis), philosophy (McTaggart's paradox---the first physical framework resolution in 120 years, the A-theory/B-theory dispute, presentism's truthmaker problem, the ``seconds per second'' absurdity argument, Zeno's arrow paradox, Shoemaker's time without change, the moving spotlight theory, Prior's branching time, the enduring/perduring dispute), cognitive science (the specious present and its cross-domain predictions, the varying flow of perceived time), and cosmology (before the Big Bang, heat death, the double-headed arrow of time, the elimination of cosmological initial conditions). The document is organized as follows. Part I establishes the constitutional foundations and upstream dependencies. Part II develops the core ontology---the two-layer definition of time, the necessity proposition, the transient/persistent distinction, simultaneity as causal incomparability, constitutional prohibitions, and the one-dimensionality of observed time. Part III presents the architecture of irreversibility---the complete derivation chain from non-simultaneity to time, the five-path framework, the three arrows and their manifestations. Part IV develops the five-channel temporal structure. Part V covers temporal scales and dynamics. Part VI addresses emergent properties and limiting behaviors. Part VII extends to cosmological time. Part VIII develops the observed time and the Probe$\to$Truncate $\to$ Capture$\to$Sink operational chain. Part IX establishes cross-ontology bridges to over twenty sister ontologies. Part X provides governance, open problems, falsifiable predictions, and deep insights. {Keywords}: Existence; basal time; transient time; persistent time; partial order; causal arrow; plastic arrow; entropic arrow; pipeline deposition; irreversibility; five-channel temporal structure; temporal stratification; observed time; Past Hypothesis elimination; McTaggart's paradox; Energy-Efficiency Theory
