Swiss Ephemeris「正しいが危険」な入力設計の検証 — 古代天体観測記録による7つの罠の定量化 / Quantitative Assessment of Seven Input-Layer Traps in Swiss Ephemeris — Cross-Validation with Ancient Astronomical Records from Three Civilizations
Abstract
English Swiss Ephemeris has served as the de facto standard ephemeris library for astrological software for over 30 years. A prior study (Paper 3-A) quantified the re-approximation precision of its .se1 files, reporting a maximum lunar error of 47.72 arcseconds. The present paper addresses a fundamentally different layer: the input processing design. Swiss Ephemeris silently accepts non-existent Gregorian dates (October 5–14, 1582) without raising errors, and provides no warnings for calendar flag misspecification, Year 0 confusion, or UT/TT timescale mixing. This paper presents the first quantitative assessment of the damage caused by this “silent acceptance” through systematic experiments spanning modern dates to 763 BC. Using a four-layer verification framework and a three-variable complete separation methodology, seven input-layer traps were identified and quantified: Trap Impact (ancient) Nature (1) Calendar flag mismatch (JUL/GREG) 561,600″ (156°) Silent acceptance (2) Year 0 convention confusion 528,109″ (147°) Silent acceptance (3) UT/TT timescale mixing 11,332″ (3.1°) Silent acceptance (4) Tropical/sidereal zodiac confusion 32,400″ (9°) Default-dependent (5) Ayanamsha selection 720″ (0.2°) Academic uncertainty (6) Eclipse existence ≠ local visibility Verdict reversal API choice (7) Babylonian calendar conversion ±1 day ±46,800″ (±13°/day) External knowledge The maximum impact of these traps (561,600″) exceeds the ephemeris precision difference between Swiss Ephemeris and Skyfield (≤103″) by over 5,000 times. Improving ephemeris precision to 0.01″ is futile if a single calendar flag error shifts the result by 156°. Cross-validation with ancient astronomical records from three civilizations confirmed Swiss Ephemeris’s computational accuracy: 4/5 planets matched the Babylonian horoscope BM 33186 (BC 410), 7/8 planetary positions matched the astronomical diary VAT 4956 (BC 568/567), 7/7 Venus daylight visibility records from Tang Dynasty China (AD 635) were perfectly reproduced, and the eclipses of Thales (BC 585) and Nineveh (BC 763) were correctly computed. Swiss Ephemeris is correct — provided it is used correctly. This paper does not claim bugs in Swiss Ephemeris; rather, it presents the first systematic quantification of the damage caused by incorrect usage, cataloging seven traps that silently produce plausible but wrong results.
