What I Am Will Be? A Convergence A Topology of Neural Substrate, Structure, an Endomorphism: Consciousness Its Cells-Itself.
Abstract
This paper proposes that consciousness is the synchronous convergence of four operations within a 50 to 150 ms temporal window. The framework derives a directed graph from the brain's architecture, mapping the four neural circuits and their connectivity. Four operations, gating, contextualization, resolution, and commitment, compose into a closed cycle that is an endomorphism, a morphism from a structure to itself. (a) Neurally, the framework proposes these operations are implemented by a Layer 5 pyramidal recurrent loop, a central lateral thalamocortical loop, a VTA-cortical dopaminergic loop, and an ACC-mediodorsal thalamic loop. Mapping these four circuits produces the directed graph. (b) Mathematically, the graph the brain produces requires the four operations any closed process runs, which mathematics formalizes as logic, set theory, type theory, and category theory. Without these four no directed graph can exist as a mathematical object, and the cycle is a closed walk on the strongly connected directed graph those operations form. Every foundational reduction program in the history of mathematics (logicism, set-theoretic, type-theoretic, categorical) failed to eliminate the other three operations, and the framework proposes this persistent failure is the evidence that the four are co-required rather than alternative. (c) The framework proposes when in operation the same four operations deliver capacity for experience of presence, world, significance, and agency in motion, drawn from the phenomenology of what each circuit's disruption produces. Consciousness is defined operationally as the capacity to produce contingent, accurate reports of currently presented information. The framework proposes the capacity requires four operations (gating, contextualization, resolution, and commitment), in sequence within a 50 to 150 ms temporal window, that no combination of fewer can substitute. The brain is the instance this paper develops, because it is where the cycle is most accessible to disruption evidence and clinical test. The framework proposes the same four-part structure recurs at the cellular scale in the geometry of the Layer 5 pyramidal neuron, at the circuit scale across four distributed loops, and at the systems scale of the synchronization window itself. Any closed process that takes input against a state and updates the state from the result is running that cycle. The framework proposes that the cycle running in that embodiment constitutes consciousness, and that what it is like to be this person is what it is like to have this trace running this cycle in this embodiment. The framework generates eight discriminating predictions and is falsifiable on graph-theoretic, architectural, and functional grounds. The four loops identified here are the empirical input to a chain of forced derivations (Stewart, 2026e, 2026f, 2026q) whose endpoint is the Standard Model gauge algebra su(3) ⊕ su(2) ⊕ u(1) at rank 4. The Appendix contains each step of the derivation chain. **Keywords:** consciousness; thalamocortical loops; disorders of consciousness; anesthesia; four-loop architecture; ACC-mediodorsal thalamic loop; VTA-cortical dopaminergic loop; central lateral thalamocortical loop; Layer 5 pyramidal recurrent loops; strongly connected directed graph; scale invariance; homeomorphism; endomorphism
