Broken Consent Chains: The Unexamined Flow of Personal Birth Data in Astrological Databases
Abstract
English In astrological practice, celebrity birth data (name, date of birth, time of birth, place of birth) circulates widely as an essential resource. However, to the author’s knowledge, no study has examined how this data is collected, or under whose consent it is accumulated, published, and redistributed. This paper traces the historical formation of Astro-Databank — the world’s largest astrological birth data database — and analyzes the legal and ethical issues at each stage of the “consent chain,” from data collection through web publication to third-party redistribution on GitHub. The analysis reveals that across all six stages from the moment data leaves the subject’s control to its arrival at end users, explicit consent from the data subject is never obtained. This problem extends beyond legal theory to inflict tangible harm on both developers and users. When third parties deploy scraping scripts as web tools and multiple users access Astro-Databank through these tools, all requests are aggregated through the tool provider’s server (a single IP address). Even 30 users each searching for one record simultaneously produces traffic indistinguishable from a bot attack (DDoS) from the data source’s perspective, concentrating IP ban risk, Terms of Service liability, and GDPR data controller responsibility on the tool provider. Users who believe they are “just searching” unwittingly participate in unauthorized systematic collection of personal data through the proxy architecture. Furthermore, the collapse of the consent chain propagates to end-use of the data. The easy availability of birth data normalizes “unsolicited divination” — astrological readings performed and publicly posted without the subject’s knowledge or consent, including public commentary on health and longevity based on estimated birth times. Within the astrological community, ethical questioning of this practice is structurally suppressed, and self-corrective mechanisms do not function. This paper demonstrates that the conflation of “publicly available” with “available for public redistribution” is a structural problem that has been overlooked in the astrological community for decades, and presents fictional data generation as a practical alternative.
