Sₙ Measurement Protocol v1.0: Operational Definitions, Numerical Scoring Standards, and Inter-Rater Reliability Procedures for Information Friction and Causal Branching
Abstract
The Narrative Entropy formula Sₙ = ∫(If × Cb) dt has been formally published and registered (Bulut, 2026a). However, the operational procedures for assigning numerical values to Information Friction (If) and Causal Branching (Cb) — and for ensuring that independent raters produce consistent scores — have not previously been specified. This gap reduces Sₙ from a calculable metric to a qualitative label, undermining the reproducibility that is the Bulut Doctrine's core methodological commitment. Thisdocument closes that gap. It provides: (1) operational definitions with discrete scoring anchors for If and Cb; (2) a standardised annotation procedure for applying scores to narrative text segments; (3) a statistical inter-rater reliability protocol based on Cohen's weighted kappa; and (4) worked examples demonstrating the full calculation pipeline from raw text to final Sₙ value. Upon adoption of this protocol, Sₙ becomes a fully operationalised metric satisfying the standards of empirical measurement.
