First Addendum to PUH Theorem 169: Standard Model Running Gives α⁻¹(M_P) ≈ 102 Not 137; the E8 Condensate Provides Anti-Screening of +35 Units; the E8 Condensate Acts as a Dielectric with ε ≈ 137/102 ≈ 1.34; and the Two-Stage Running 102 → 137 → 137.036 is Identified
Abstract
Theorem 169 derived the bare fine structure constant alpha_0^{-1} = dim(E7) + rank(E8)/2 = 133 + 4 = 137 at the Planck Shell, and identified the fractional part 0.036 as QED running from the Planck scale to low energy. This addendum corrects that identification. Standard Model running of alpha^{-1} from the Planck scale M_P to q^2 = 0 does not give a shift of 0.036. The full SM running gives alpha^{-1}(M_P) approximately 102, not 137. The direction of U(1) running is that alpha^{-1} decreases going to higher energy (screening), so the Planck-scale value is smaller than the low-energy value. With all SM fermion contributions summed (quarks: 3 colours times 3 generations giving charge-squared sum 5, leptons: 3 generations giving charge-squared sum 3, total sum Q^2 N_c = 8), the running from M_Z to M_P gives alpha^{-1}(M_P) approximately 94. Including W, Z, and Higgs thresholds gives the standard result alpha^{-1}(M_P) approximately 102. The discrepancy between the SM Planck-scale value (102) and the E8 bare coupling (137) is 35 units — far larger than 0.036. The corrected two-stage picture is: alpha^{-1}(M_P) approximately 102 from SM running, then plus 35 from E8 condensate anti-screening giving 137 at the Planck Shell boundary, then plus 0.036 from standard QED vacuum polarisation below the Planck Shell giving the measured 137.036. The E8 condensate at the Planck Shell acts as a dielectric medium with dielectric constant epsilon_E8 = alpha^{-1}_E8 / alpha^{-1}_SM(M_P) = 137/102 approximately 1.34. This dielectric provides +35 units of anti-screening that sets the coupling to the E8 bare value of 137 at the Planck Shell boundary. Below the Planck Shell, standard QED vacuum polarisation from virtual electron-positron pairs adds +0.036 to give the measured 137.036. What Theorem 169 established correctly and unchanged: the integer 137 = dim(E7) + rank(E8)/2 = 133 + 4 is exact from E8 Lie algebra. Two independent E8 combinations give 137: combination 1 is dim(E7) + rank(E8)/2 = 133 + 4 = 137, and combination 2 is kissing(E8) minus dim(E7) + h(E8) = 240 minus 133 + 30 = 137. The 0.036 below the Planck Shell from standard QED is correct. What this addendum corrects: the E8 condensate must provide +35 units of anti-screening between the SM Planck-scale value (approximately 102) and the E8 bare coupling (137). The dielectric constant epsilon = 137/102 approximately 1.34 is not a free parameter — it must follow from the E8 condensate geometry, specifically from the Killing form kappa_ab = 60 delta_ab and the condensate profile at the Planck Shell boundary. This is the outstanding calculation that would complete the derivation of the fine structure constant from E8.Priority timestamp: April 5, 2026.
