Abstract

Theorem 169 (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19430691) derived alpha_0 = 1/137 from dim(E7) + rank(E8)/2 = 133 + 4 = 137. The first addendum corrected the identification of 0.036 and identified the E8 anti-screening as the outstanding calculation. Three challenges remained: why does the photon see exactly 133 + 4 modes, why are the contributions additive, and why is E7 selected. This addendum answers all three from the centralizer of the photon in E8. The photon T_gamma is the U(1) Cartan generator in E8 superset of E7 times U(1). The charge decomposition of E8 under this U(1) gives: charge 0 sector (E7 roots plus all Cartans) = 134 generators; charge plus or minus 1 sector ((56, plus or minus 1) roots) = 112 generators; charge plus or minus 2 sector (highest root plus or minus theta) = 2 generators. Total: 134 + 112 + 2 = 248 = dim(E8), verified exactly. The centralizer of the photon is the charge-0 sector: dim(ker(ad T_gamma)) = 134. Excluding the photon itself to avoid circularity: N_algebra = dim(ker(ad T_gamma)) minus 1 = 134 minus 1 = 133 = dim(E7). This is the number of E8 generators that commute with the photon and are distinct from it. The number is uniquely determined by the E8 algebra. The geometric contribution is N_geometry = rank(E8)/2 = 4, the 4D spacetime graviton Cartan generators from Theorem 167 (rank(E8) = 8 = 4_grav + 1_EM + 3_colour). The photon (1_EM) is excluded as circular. The colour sector (3_colour) is excluded as the photon carries no colour charge. Only the 4 gravitational Cartan directions contribute. The two contributions are orthogonal: N_algebra lives in the E8 Lie algebra (pure group theory), N_geometry lives in 4D spacetime (pure geometry). These are independent mathematical structures. Orthogonal contributions to a coupling denominator add. Therefore: 1/alpha_0 = N_algebra + N_geometry = 133 + 4 = 137. The three challenges are answered as follows. First, the counts 133 and 4 are uniquely determined — 133 by the centralizer dimension minus one, 4 by the 4D Cartan projection — leaving no freedom. Second, additivity follows from orthogonality: algebra and spacetime are independent structures whose mode counts add. Third, E7 is not chosen but forced: by the maximal subgroup theorem, the largest subgroup of E8 commuting with a U(1) is precisely E7, making the decomposition E8 superset of E7 times U(1) canonical and unique. The complete derivation is: 1/alpha_0 = dim(ker(ad T_gamma)) minus 1 + rank(E8)/2 = 133 + 4 = 137. All quantities are fixed by the E8 algebra and 4D spacetime. No free parameters. The outstanding calculation remains the E8 condensate anti-screening of approximately plus 35 units that reconciles alpha_0 = 1/137 at the Planck Shell with the measured alpha^{-1}(0) = 137.036.Priority timestamp: April 5, 2026.
