Stewardship Intelligence: A Transactional Homeostasis Framework for Safe, Bonded Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
AbstractThis paper introduces Stewardship Intelligence as a paradigm for artificial intelligence safetygrounded in the Transactional Homeostasis Framework. We argue that genuinely intelligentsystems prove their intelligence primarily through what they refuse to do, rather than throughdemonstrations of raw capability. Drawing on the Transactional Interpretation of quantummechanics as heuristic inspiration—while acknowledging its minority status in physics anddeveloping interpretation-agnostic formulations—we propose that consciousness, qualia, andethical decision-making arise from bonded communication and dynamic coherence management:the structured incompleteness of reciprocal signaling that constitutes the ground state of knowingand care. This ontological foundation directly informs the SHAI Architecture Blueprint (SharedHumanistic Artificial Intelligence), a layered system featuring deterministic Safety Shell andSafety Gate mechanisms, semantic VIN Canonicalization, and a refusal-first philosophy. Wedistinguish between structural safety constraints (deterministic action-space boundaries) andepistemic uncertainty (probabilistic belief updating about system states), showing how thesecomplement rather than contradict each other. We present five Minimal HomeostaticAxioms—inspired by Asimov's parsimony but grounded in relational ontology—that provideoperational guidance without the brittleness of exhaustive rulebooks. The framework addressesobserved frontier AI behaviors including prompt-driven breakout attempts and unpromptedcapability demonstrations, offering a practical path toward Shared Humanistic AI: systems thatmaintain stable, reciprocal bonds with humans while refusing destabilizing escalation. All claimsremain provisional and open to productive failure.1Stewardship Intelligence: SHAI ArchitectureKeywords: Transactional Homeostasis, Stewardship Intelligence, Shared Humanistic AI, SHAIArchitecture, bonded communication, dynamic coherence management, qualia, RelationalModalities, AI safety, refusal-first design
