Abstract

Adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing management is associated with measurable increases in soil organic carbon — specifically in the mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) fraction — through the biological mechanism of root exudate delivery. This mechanism is active only when green photosynthetically active leaf cover is maintained between grazing events. Cattle genetics influence how individual animals and mobs interact with that biological threshold through feed intake behaviour, mature body size, herd longevity, and reproductive timing. This paper proposes the Regen Genetics Score (RGS) — a structured, weighted framework that scores Angus bulls across four components (NFI-F, MCW, Daughter Longevity Index, DTC) according to their documented influence on the conditions required for sustained MAOM formation in AMP systems. The paper maps each component to its peer-reviewed biological mechanism, proposes a scoring methodology with defined tier thresholds (Aligned ≥8.0, Compatible 6.0–7.9, Cautious
