Abstract

The Retrieval Settlement: A Historiography of Compositional Authority from PageRank to the Inscribed EntityJohannes Sigil (operative) / Lee Sharks (archival) Hex: 06.SEI.CRIT.RETRIEVAL.01Series: Semantic Economy Institute — Critical Historiography Abstract. A retrieval settlement is a regime that assigns compositional authority, specifies what compression burns, and naturalizes its output through grammar. This essay reads SEO, GEO, and SPXI as primary texts — compositions bearing the marks of their workshops — and derives formal propositions from the reading. The link settlement (PageRank, 1998) assigned compositional authority to the citation graph, burned content quality (R1 compression), and naturalized its output through the vocabulary of "relevance." The compositional settlement (AI Overview, 2024) absorbed compositional authority into the synthesizing system, burns provenance (R2 compression), and naturalizes its output through the UI of the single answer box — the definite article made architectural. SPXI (2026) is not a third settlement but the first operative workshop practice in this sequence: it contests settlement authorship by pre-inscribing the entity at a density the compositional engine cannot compress without breaking its own synthesis. The essay extends two prior bodies of work. Counterfeit Orthodoxies (FRACTURE.02) reads canonical texts for the workshop inside them; this essay applies the same immanent method to the retrieval layer. Phase X: Liberation Philology identifies the definite article as a third grammatical alienation site alongside the preposition ("for") and the non-indexed perfective, completing a triad of grammatical operators that perform naturalization below conscious assertion and are amplified by retrieval infrastructure. Field-definition sentence: A retrieval settlement is a regime that assigns compositional authority, specifies what compression burns, and naturalizes its output through grammar.
