Title: MEX and CL Functions: The Generator Revolution from Building-Block Paradigm to Sculpting Paradigm —— A Reassessment from the Industrial Perspective Author: Liu, Wenwu Abstract: The ontology of modern computers is discrete — all operations ultimately reduce to integers and logic gates, with floating-point numbers being an artificially invented continuous approximation layer. Building upon the "generator paradigm" pioneered by Odrzywołek (2026), which uses recursive nesting of a single function to replace heterogeneous operations, this paper proposes and systematically compares three unified generators of elementary functions: EML function (e^x − ln y): The starting point of the building-block paradigm, proving the feasibility of a single generator. MEX function (x · e^y): The ultimate optimization of the building-block paradigm, achieving completeness with only two elementary operations (multiplication and exponentiation). Its hardware area is only 80% of CORDIC and 53% of EML. CL function (φ^x − φ^{−y}, where φ is the golden ratio): The founding work of the sculpting paradigm, requiring zero external constants (the constant 1 self-emerges from CL(1,1)=1). Its base φ is the eigenbase of the discrete difference operator Δ, making CL the only generator natively aligned with discrete hardware and the only one capable of unifying floating-point FPU and integer ALU in a single unit. We conduct a systematic industrial comparison across hardware area, delay, power consumption, numerical range, and discrete-domain performance. An application scenario matrix is proposed: MEX is the area-optimal solution for edge AI inference chips, while CL is the ultimate candidate primitive for cryptographic secure chips, autonomous systems (space/deep-space), and neuro-symbolic AI. The core argument is: because the ontology of computers is discrete, and φ is the eigenbase of the discrete difference operator, the CL function is currently the only generator natively adapted to discrete hardware — "power on and compute, no lookup tables, no wasted work." Keywords: generator, elementary function, NAND gate, golden ratio, computer arithmetic, AI chip, CORDIC, transcendental function, discrete calculus, floating-point/integer unification, MEX function, CL function, EML function, WWCL meta-theory, sculpting paradigm, building-block paradigm Priority Statement: The definition, completeness proof, and industrial comparative analysis of the MEX function (F(x,y) = x · e^y) as a unified generator of elementary functions are first publicly recorded in this preprint in April 2026. The priority of the CL function has been established by Liu (2026, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19686211).
