Abstract

MAMMA code v2026_02_16 MAMMA (Magma Ascent Mathematical Modelling and Analysis) if a Fortran 90 code written to solve a conduit model for magma ascent dynamics in volcanic conduits. The main author of the code is Mattia de’ Michieli Vitturi (mattia.demichielivitturi@ingv.it). The main version of the code can be found here https://github.com/demichie/MAMMA. This version of the code has been developed by Giuseppe La Spina (glaspina@gmail.com; giuseppe.laspina@ingv.it). The system of partial differential equations implemented in this version of the code has been described in La Spina et al. (2021, 2022, 2026 in prep). Please refer to those papers to have a complete description of the conduit model and of all the constitutive equations. For any problems, doubts or suggestions please send an email to giuseppe.laspina@ingv.it This version of the MAMMA code runs on Linux. In order to run the code, you need to compile the source code to generate the executable file. Using Terminal, browse to the SOURCE directory of the MAMMA code. Before compiling the source code, make sure you have all the necessary libraries. On the Terminal execute the following command: sudo apt-get install gfortran make liblapack* libblas* Once all the libraries have been installed, from the SOURCE directory of the MAMMA code execute the following: make cleanmake all At this point, in the SOURCE directory you should find the executable file “MAMMA.x”. Copy the executable file into the RUN directory and then browse the RUN folder: cp MAMMA.x ../RUN/cd ../RUN You can now run the MAMMA code just typing from the RUN folder: ./MAMMA.x The input parameters for the MAMMA code are set in the “conduit_solver.inp” file within the RUN folder. Every time you run the code, it creates several files where the solution is stored (*.std files). It also creates a backup file (*.bak) with the inputparameters you chose. The name of the backup file is given by the “RUN_NAME” parameter in the “conduit_solver.inp” file. By choosing a different RUN_NAME each time, you can ensure that your results are not overwritten. You can plot the results using Matlab. Open Matlab and browse the MATLAB folder within the MAMMA folder. Run the Matlab script “plot_SingleRun.m”, browse the RUN folder (where all the computation of the solutions are stored) and select the numerical simulations you want to plot.
