Life and Consciousness as Physical Variables: The Action-Information Kernel and the Scaling of Directed Work from Biospheric to Astrophysical Consequence
Abstract
This paper introduces the concept of action-information as a physically constrained capacity to edit the universe through directed work. The central thesis is that life and consciousness should not be treated merely as passive phenomena inside the universe, but as physical variables capable of redirecting energy according to information. The framework begins from the MetaTime ontology of latent and executed information, in which physical reality is understood as the execution of information under energetic, causal, and thermodynamic constraints. Within this ontology, life is identified as the first action-information engine: microorganisms, plants, corals, insects, animals, and ecosystems modify atmosphere, climate, soils, hydrology, geochemistry, and planetary structure without requiring reflective consciousness. Consciousness is then interpreted as a later evolutionary phase of the same process, adding perception, emotion, memory, intention, symbolic planning, technology, and artificial intelligence as amplifiers of directed work. The paper distinguishes between empirically established and speculative regimes. The planetary phase of action-information is already established: biological and technological systems have reshaped Earth’s atmosphere, biosphere, surface, climate, and hydrology. Human action-information has also crossed the planetary boundary in a weak astrophysical sense through lunar and Martian artifacts, interplanetary probes, and the measured perturbation of a small asteroid. However, present civilization remains far below the energy, momentum, confinement, and mass-control thresholds required to disrupt the Moon, alter Earth’s orbit, generate dangerous black holes, or produce stellar-scale events. The action-information channel is formalized through execution currents, causal kernels, and non-Markovian memory. The paper introduces an action kernel K_A, connecting intention, biological programs, institutional memory, technological planning, and artificial intelligence to delayed physical execution. It also clarifies the coarse-graining problem: current human action-information is locally and planetarily significant but Hubble-volume negligible, while the existence of extraterrestrial, post-biological, or cosmologically distributed action-information channels cannot be set to zero by anthropocentric assumption. The resulting framework connects biological agency, conscious action, technological civilization, artificial intelligence, and astrophysical scaling within the broader MetaTime program. It proposes that the open scientific question is not whether action-information can modify physical reality—that is already established at planetary scale—but how far this capacity can scale under constraints of energy, causality, entropy, memory, and technological amplification.
