Abstract

This Related Signal Note (RSN) documents and evaluates the empirical result reported by Xu et al. (Nature, 29 April 2026, doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10470-2), demonstrating the spontaneous formation of a two-dimensional polar hedgehog/vortex lattice in bulk A-site layer-ordered perovskites. The reported structure exhibits a periodicity down to ~4 nm and arises intrinsically, without reliance on external boundary conditions such as interfaces, strain, or applied fields. The stabilising mechanism is attributed to cooperative coupling of in-phase and out-of-phase octahedral rotation modes, consistent with hybrid improper ferroelectricity. These coupled lattice modes—describable via phonon interactions—constrain the crystal structure and stabilise the topological polar configuration. This RSN situates the result within the Tuckwell corpus as a primary empirical neighbouring signal in the D3 / topology / boundary-conditioned persistence cluster. The central relevance is the demonstration that topological structure can be intrinsically stabilised by internal structural constraints, rather than imposed externally. This provides an empirical anchor for constraint-driven intrinsic topology in a physical material system. The note applies TRIDENT gating and a TTR-1 transfer discipline. The signal passes structure, boundary condition, and constraint-driven topology gates (G1–G3), with functional persistence held at partial (G4). A strict transfer constraint is enforced: this result operates at the materials/lattice (T2) tier and does not test or confirm the D3 algebraic condition (T1). Cross-tier reference is permitted; cross-tier equivalence is explicitly excluded. Original schematic illustrations are included to represent (i) octahedral rotation coupling and (ii) conceptual vortex/hedgehog lattice structure. These are original visualisations and do not reproduce copyrighted figures from the source publication. This document is not peer reviewed and is filed as a corpus signal note.
