Abstract

The three-register read is a methodology for diagnosing systems that stipulate a target and operate to deliver it. A target is read in three parallel registers. The explicit-claim register is what the target publicly claims about its stipulated phenomenon. The deployed-import register is what the target must put to work for any of its claims to operate. The success-condition register is what the target has stipulated as its phenomenon by calling itself a system for delivering X. The three registers do different jobs and the geometry between them produces six diagnostic patterns and twelve named diagnostic moves. The instruments operate at two scales, single-target diagnosis of one system and field-level diagnosis of cross-system convergence, with the same instrument inventory and qualitatively different outputs at each scale. The methodology is the field-facing tool of the Endomorph Immanent Reckoning Discipline, where the discipline is the analytical practice that operates the methodology under constraints that produce binding readings (Stewart, 2026au), and the substrate that gives the methodology its 2-4-4-2 architecture is the four-incident endomorphism (Stewart, 2026g). A reader who picks up this paper and applies the instruments produces a reading. A practitioner who operates the methodology under the discipline produces a binding reading. This paper specifies the methodology, names its precedents in Lakatos and Cummins, and locates the contribution in the combination of the three registers, the diagnostic geometry between them, and the reading of cross-target convergence as evidence about the stipulated phenomenon. **Keywords:** philosophy of science; methodology; structural diagnosis; target-stipulating systems; deployed imports; success conditions; Lakatos; protective belt; constitutive explananda; cross-system convergence; theory comparison; consciousness studies
