Field-driven magnetic particle assembly simulation
Abstract
This MATLAB code simulates the gravity-resisting vertical growth of magnetically assembled structures from dispersed microparticles under a combined static and oscillating magnetic field. The model tracks individual particles using an overdamped Langevin dynamics approach. It includes magnetic dipole–dipole interactions with Debye relaxation, gravitational and buoyancy forces, near-field repulsion to prevent overlap, and hydrodynamic interactions computed via the Rotne–Prager–Yamakawa (RPY) tensor with wall corrections (Blake's image system). An adaptive time-stepping scheme ensures numerical stability. The simulation outputs three synchronized video files (3D perspective, front view, and top view) and periodic keyframe figures showing structural evolution. The code was used to investigate the dynamic self-assembly, growth kinetics, and morphological phase behavior of magnetic microparticle assemblies in the associated publication. It runs without any additional toolboxes.
