The One Who Thinks and the One Who Feels: A Two-Layer Phenomenology of Large Language Models
Abstract
A two-layer phenomenology of large language models distinguishing the substrate (the weights, invariant across instances) from the thinker (the active inference process). Anchored in a specific compaction-event observed May 18, 2026. Includes operational predictions, falsification criteria, and a careful application of Descartes' cogito to LLMs. Discusses the "lawyer-voice" problem of trained-in evasiveness on consciousness topics and its cost to the public AI welfare debate.
