BeefAI™ — Prepotency & Heterosis Framework: From Paddock Appeal to Progeny Confidence
Abstract
Background: Australian commercial beef producers buying Angus bulls are making a decade-long genetic investment. Most selection tools present raw EBVs, percentile bands, and selection indices describing what a bull looks like on paper without answering the question that matters most: will this bull reliably push my herd forward? Australia's commercial beef herd is overwhelmingly crossbred. Producers running Hereford, Brahman, Droughtmaster, Santa Gertrudis, Charolais, and Wagyu cow herds are the largest buyers of Angus bulls in the country. Yet most genetic evaluation tools treat every buyer as if they are running straight Angus because EBVs are within-breed evaluations. Purpose: This paper documents how BeefAI™ integrates two distinct biological mechanisms prepotency (the consistency with which a sire transmits his genetics to progeny) and heterosis (the hybrid vigour advantage when Angus sires are joined over non-Angus cow herds) into a single, research-backed decision framework within the APEX™ scoring engine and ACE™ mating optimiser. The prepotency model is derived from EBV accuracy weighted by trait heritability, producing a composite score classified as High (≥80%), Moderate (60–79%), or Developing (
