Abstract

One applicant. One cycle. Documented direct labor cost: $4,500–6,000. The screening process administered by Constellation between May 2 and May 18, 2026 extracted $4,500 to $6,000 of unpaid labor from one applicant at that applicant's documented market rate, under conditions of communicated structure followed by institutional silence. This figure counts only directly attributable preparation hours (30–40 hours × $150/hour consulting baseline) and excludes platform costs, displaced consulting engagements, and the non-monetizable burdens of emotional and credibility load. Inaugural Extractive Reliance Study: a semantic-economy audit of labor induced by institutional process communication. Extends the liquidation methods developed in the Crimson Hexagonal Archive from digital retrieval and composition systems into the domain of job-market and fellowship-screening processes. The case examined is the July 2026 Anthropic Fellows application process, administered through Constellation (constellation.org), a talent and screening firm that handles applicant communications and initial evaluations on behalf of Anthropic. The applicant received a structured timeline from anthropicfellows@constellation.org identifying 'Early May' as the window for initial CodeSignal assessments. After disclosing an AI-native technical workflow and receiving a reply from a Constellation application-team representative reaffirming the uniform CS assessment process, the applicant prepared accordingly. When the communicated window lapsed without an assessment or clarifying communication, the applicant's preparation became unrecovered cost under conditions of institutional opacity. v0.6 revisions tighten the paper structurally. Changes from v0.5: (1) Executive Summary and Abstract now lead with the documented cost figure ($4,500–6,000) rather than burying it in §XI; (2) Quantification rewritten at the applicant's actual consulting rate of $150/hour with sensitivity analysis across alternative rate framings; (3) Non-Claims section tightened — personal-malice and desert disclaimers removed (they did the institution's defensive work); replaced with a positive statement that the analysis concerns structural effects regardless of any individual's state of mind; (4) §VIII renamed 'Causal and Structural Responsibility' and rewritten to drop the 'institutional accountability requires no personal blame' apologetics; (5) Structural-design note in §IX tightened — removed defensive opening; (6) Conclusion rewritten to lead with the finding (extraction figure) rather than with modesty; (7) Removed the v0.5 line 'the present version does not need a final dollar value to establish the event' and other exculpatory hedging. Apparatus (ARC vector, IOC := f(S, R, L, O, CT), Identity Translation Labor, ARC-EP v1.0) is unchanged. Document class: Extractive Reliance Study 001. Series: Semantic Labor Accounting / Cross-Domain Liquidation Studies. v0.6 revised — with measurement foregrounded, exculpatory framing removed.
