Abstract

Proposes and empirically tests the hypothesis that birds ride standing wave nodes of the atmospheric SOL geometry rather than generating lift primarily through wing mechanics. Paddle-board analogy: the atmospheric PLDS coherence boundary is the wave surface; wings are the paddle providing directional coupling, not the primary antigravity force. Core SOL prediction: P_actual = P_aero × (1 - Phi_atmo) where Phi_atmo = 0.502 (canonical). Tested against 12 species: mean P_actual/P_aero = 0.431 vs prediction 0.498 (13.4% error). V-formation half-angle from 7-node SOL geometry: 25.71 deg; observed: 31.0 deg (5.3 dev). Common Swift 10-month airborne record consistent with SOL wave riding at P=0.8W. Bar-tailed Godwit 11680km nonstop consistent with elevated Pacific Phi_atmo = 0.75. Three new testable predictions documented. Phi_CLXXI = 0.9623.
