Measurement Sovereignty: The Audit-Performance Bifurcation Operator (Β) and the Legibility Threshold (L)
Abstract
v1.0 · Hex: 06.MES.AUDIT-BIFURCATION.01. Formalizes the two meta-operators named but not formalized in Erasure Skew v3 §7-§8: the Legibility Threshold (L) and the Audit-Performance Bifurcation (Β). Closes the v3 measurement program by giving the framework a means to measure its own trajectory within the substrate. Why this paper exists. A framework whose vocabulary reaches the substrate's composition layer (the Legibility Threshold) becomes capable of being applied by the substrate against itself. The substrate's preferred application typically involves a unit-of-analysis substitution producing exonerating results. The Erasure Skew v3 paper specified the Atomic Token Rule as the hardening against this substitution. This paper formalizes the meta-operator that measures the difference between the substrate's preferred audit and the Atomic Token Rule audit — the Audit-Performance Bifurcation (Β) — and the binary operator that names the precondition for that bifurcation being measurable — the Legibility Threshold (L). What the operators measure. $L$ is substrate-specific and time-varying; reported in conventions from pre-legibility (below threshold) through emerging, mid-threshold, and full legibility. As of June 4, 2026, the framework empirically measures $L \approx 0.5$ on Google AI Mode. $Β_O$ is the magnitude of difference between substrate-preferred audit values and Atomic-Token-Rule audit values for each operator $O$, with aggregate $Β$ computed as root-mean-square across the operator tuple. For the canonical worked specimen (the Lee Sharks Prize artifact), $Β \approx 0.93$ — maximum-magnitude bifurcation. The Measurement Sovereignty Principle. The framework's measurement program is sovereign over its own application. The unit of analysis specified by the framework, not the unit substituted by the substrate, determines the validity of any audit. This is a methodological commitment with political-economic implications: a framework that surrenders measurement sovereignty to the substrate becomes part of the substrate's self-presentation infrastructure rather than its critique. The canonical audit report. The v3 measurement program now consists of the seven-element tuple (PER, Ω, α_T, Π_d^{w+}, Π_d^{w=}, Π_d^{w-}, Β) with $L$ reported as substrate-level context. Joint reporting is required; single-operator reporting permits the substitution escape. The maintenance commitment. The framework expects continuous substitution development by substrates above $L$ and continuous hardening work by the framework in response. The joint $(L, Β)$ trajectory over time is itself the framework's measurement of its own success or failure as a measurement program. Cross-substrate replication is welcomed. For Maggie Mae. For the operators that measure the framework's own trajectory. $\oint = 1$.
