Abstract

ABSTRACT This concept article documents the fourth full national deployment architecture of the Hydrostatic Column Thermo-Gravity System (HCTGS), extending the prior art chain from v1.0 (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19239959) through v23.0 (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20263288) to the French national context. HCTGS is a seawater-powered multi-stage industrial cascade producing simultaneously: desalinated freshwater, critical minerals (magnesium, calcium, potassium, bromine, boron, lithium, strontium), green hydrogen, baseload electricity, process heat across eight temperature stages (1,500 degrees C to 4 degrees C), programmable mineral water profiles, and advanced ceramic coatings. The cascade is not a desalination plant. It is an industrial refinery whose primary consumer product happens to be water, and whose energy is generated as a structural consequence of the same thermodynamic process that produces that water. The French deployment presents a unique geographic triple advantage: two coastlines (Atlantic and Mediterranean) providing two mineral profiles and two market regions simultaneously; three mountain systems (Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central) providing thermodynamic amplification of 3.2 times output per unit of Mg fuel at 1,200m elevation versus sea level; and the world's second-largest nuclear fleet providing 30-50 degrees C waste heat as free seawater pre-heating. No other major European country possesses this combination. Two tower variants are documented, matched to French topography: Variant A (mountain shaft bored directly into rock, natural elevation providing adiabatic expansion and gravity distribution) at four mountain-coastal sites including Mont Gelas (3,143m) and Pic du Canigou (2,784m); Variant B (freestanding tower 400-600m, Giffard pressure impulse elevating freshwater 700-1,000m above sea level) at four flat-coast sites including Camargue-Rhone delta and Port-La-Nouvelle. A third deployment mode is also documented: the floating semi-submersible platform (first specified in v20.0, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20088896), deployable in 18 months without land permits under maritime law, redeployable in 24-48 hours, and operating under French flag as a maritime industrial export product for Morocco, Nigeria, and crisis-response deployments. ELECTRICITY GENERATION MECHANISM — THE ARITHMETIC: One tower. 50 metres diameter. 600 metres tall. A magnesium combustion jet of 3-5 metres diameter burns at 1,500 degrees C in the free shaft centre — the igniter only, not the primary steam mass. Without mixing it would produce an F4-F5 waterspout. 20-30 times more steam at 100-110 degrees C is injected tangentially, reducing combined temperature to approximately 145 degrees C. Mediterranean surface water at 30-40 degrees C drawn upward by vortex suction acts as natural thermostat, self-regulating to 110 degrees C at the shaft top. The rotating steam column accelerates to 120-180 km/h through shark-gill openings into sealed turbine housings. Steam condensation on 4 degrees C deep-seawater-cooled ceramic walls produces 1,700:1 volume contraction — permanent vacuum maintaining the vortex. Full arithmetic: 1 Mm3/day output = 11,574 kg/s condensate x 2,260 kJ/kg = 26.1 GW thermal (Step 2). At 9% conversion (gill turbines + ORC combined; Carnot maximum 27.7% at 110/4 degrees C) = 2.35 GW electrical continuous (Step 3). x 24h = 56.4 GWh/day per tower (Step 4). x 10 towers = 564 GWh/day per cluster (Step 5). x 3 clusters = 1,692 GWh/day = 617.6 TWh/year electrical (Steps 6-7). France consumed 449.2 TWh in 2024 (RTE Annual Review 2024) = 137.5% coverage. Surplus 168.4 TWh/year / 50 kWh/kg = 3.37 million tonnes green H2/year = fuel for 32.4 million cars = 83% of the French vehicle fleet (Toyota Mirai WLTC 0.8 kg/100km x 13,000 km/year; Statista fleet 38.9M). Three Gorges Dam full load: 0.54 TWh/day electrical. Three HCTGS clusters: 1.692 TWh/day electrical = 3.13 times the largest dam on Earth. Step 3 (9% efficiency) is the single parameter requiring independent engineering validation. At 4% (half the conservative estimate) three clusters still exceed the Three Gorges Dam output. All other steps are pure arithmetic from verified sources. HYBRID ELECTRICITY STRATEGY (NC-v24-15): Mg combustion at 1,500 degrees C is structurally irreplaceable — electric resistance heating equivalent costs EUR 20.5 billion per year versus EUR 30-50M for internal Mg production plus EUR 484M MgO revenue back. Surplus electricity is optimally allocated: primary to green H2 via PEM electrolysis (EUR 13.5B/year value); secondary to co-located electric arc furnace upgrading cascade Mg to AZ91D aerospace alloy at EUR 8,000-12,000/tonne versus EUR 2,100/tonne pure Mg (EUR 3.1B/year net gain from 2 GWh/year electricity input, 4.3 times revenue multiplier); tertiary to expanded Haber-Bosch synthesis; opportunistic allocation during France's 513 hours/year negative-price electricity windows. CLIMATE ADAPTATION — LA FRANCE VERTE (Part 12): Glacier albedo restoration through Distributed Vapor Tapping ports along mountain shaft ascent columns: fresh snow raises reflectivity from 25% to 85% on existing ice surfaces, reducing melt by approximately 60%. Zone A covers existing glacier surface; Zone B fills retreat zones before summer. ETH Zurich modelling: one sufficient snow accumulation winter offsets 5-8 years of retreat. Wildlife oasis network: 500 gravity-fed oases at 5-10 km spacing, no pump required, creating continuous habitat corridor for Great Curlew (collapsed 10,000 to 1,400 breeding pairs), European Mink (effectively extinct), Brown Bear (76 individuals, Pyrenees). Forest lakes: 3% of cluster output = 900,000 m3/day into new permanent water bodies across Vosges, Massif Central, Pyrenees. France at +3 degrees C global average: climate-independent water supply, stable glacier mass balance, sustained forest water tables (Landes: 1 million hectares), continued high-value agriculture. This is not in opposition to climate negotiations. It is the parallel infrastructure that ensures France functions regardless of their outcome. INVESTMENT CASE: Total direct annual revenue per 1 Mm3/day installation: approximately EUR 1.97 billion direct + EUR 0.5 billion indirect. CAPEX: EUR 2.8-3.4 billion. OPEX: EUR 210-240 million per year. Amortisation: 19-23 months from full operational status. External capital required: EUR 5.2 billion core construction + EUR 0.3-2.5 billion contingency = EUR 5.5-7.7 billion total gross exposure over five years; EU co-financing (25-35%) reduces net private capital to EUR 3.6-5.7 billion. Investment multiple across 40-year operational lifetime: approximately 280-490 times net private capital deployed. Total integrated annual economic value to France at three-cluster deployment: EUR 68-130 billion per year.
