Field Notes from the Substrate — Translations No. 4: c and How Fast Reality Can Hand Off a Change
Abstract
This working note is the fourth installment in Field Notes from the Substrate, a series translating physics-facing concepts through Structural Flow. The note translates c not first as “the speed of light,” but as the coherent propagation ceiling: the invariant ceiling under which carried consequence can be lawfully taken up through density-held spacetime as the same answerability-bearing carried burden. The core claim is that c is the shared ceiling on how fast carried consequence can become carried consequence again. Light reveals this ceiling cleanly and speed measures it classically, but the proposed Structural Flow role is deeper: lawful same-burden handoff under one coherent ceiling. This is a conditional role-shape translation. It depends on two working lemmas: bounded same-register answerability is finite, and zero-duration uptake is not uptake. These lemmas are treated as working lemmas, not as numerical or formal closure. The note defines a distinguishable carried update as a retained, bounded, consequence-bearing difference that remains available for lawful continuation and comparison as the same update across local structural passage. Same-update handoff requires the same answerability-bearing burden to remain recognizable while a new carrier actually takes it up. Recognition makes the propagation ceiling transportable across lawful local variation. Coherence makes it one jointly holdable law. The candidate failure signature is: lawful local uptake burdens exist, but their ceiling cannot be held as one invariant propagation order across lawful local descriptions. Compressed: finite uptake fails to cohere. The primary failure regime is Drift. This note does not derive the numerical value of c, derive Special Relativity, derive General Relativity, derive Lorentz transformations, derive Maxwell’s equations, derive photon ontology, derive quantum field theory, derive quantum gravity, derive Planck length or Planck time, claim spacetime is a lattice, introduce a preferred frame, derive Hawking Radiation, solve the black-hole information paradox, or translate every appearance of c in physics. It translates one structural face of c: the propagation-ceiling face.
