Workflow for Generating Thematic Parent Code Counts for Table 2 in the PEARC26 Conference Proceedings Short Paper on the 2025 RCD Workforce Survey
Abstract
This supplemental document describes the workflow used to generate the distribution of thematic parent code counts for responses to two open-ended survey questions focusing on: (1) the complexities of Research Computing and Data (RCD) work, and (2) the types of challenges in facilitating RCD work that require the most effort to manage. The resulting table includes separate columns for complexity and challenges, which allows comparison of the relative ranking participants from the survey assigned to each thematic code. These findings are discussed in the PEARC26 proceedings paper and presented in Table 2 [2]. For overview of thematic codes, a supplemental codebook document is provided that includes the thematic parent codes and example quotes that we used in defining the thematic codes [1].
