Observations of the Latitude and Frequency Distributions of Equatorward-Propagating Chorus Waves
Abstract
This public dataset includes data used in the paper "Observations of the Latitude and Frequency Distributions of Equatorward Propagating Chorus Waves" by Wang et al. (2026). The event_specific.csv is the chorus wave rising-tone elements analysis for the Van Allen Probe A burst-mode event at 2016-05-08 07:01:42, corresponding to Figure 1 in the paper. This event has 20 poleward (red) elements and 13 equatorward (blue) elements. The meaning of each column is as follows: Column Description direction Propagation-direction class assigned to the element from the Poynting-vector/angle criterion. element_id Element identifier within this burst, e.g., R1 for red/anti-parallel elements and B1 for blue/parallel elements. used_for_tara Boolean flag indicating whether this element was selected as the representative element for the TaRA chirping-rate estimate. start_time_utc UTC start time of the fitted spectrogram ridge for the element. end_time_utc UTC end time of the fitted spectrogram ridge for the element. start_time_rel_s Element start time in seconds relative to the first spectrogram time bin of the burst. end_time_rel_s Element end time in seconds relative to the first spectrogram time bin of the burst. duration_s Duration of the element in seconds. start_freq_hz Start frequency of the fitted ridge, in Hz. end_freq_hz End frequency of the fitted ridge, in Hz. freq_range_hz Frequency change across the fitted ridge, calculated as end_freq_hz - start_freq_hz, in Hz. chirping_rate_hz_s Linear frequency chirping rate of the fitted ridge, in Hz/s. avg_power_nt2_hz Mean spectral power density within the detected element region, in nT²/Hz. peak_power_nt2_hz Maximum spectral power density within the detected element region, in nT²/Hz. avg_theta_deg Mean propagation/Poynting angle of the detected element region, in degrees. peak_freq_hz Frequency at which the element reaches its maximum spectral power, in Hz. peak_time_utc UTC time at which the element reaches its maximum spectral power. peak_time_rel_s Peak-power time in seconds relative to the first spectrogram time bin of the burst. The statistics.csv includes all burst-mode events used for the statistical analysis in Section 3 of the paper. The meaning of each column is as follows: Column Meaning name_bi Name (identifier) of the event t0 Event start time as a Unix timestamp, in seconds. L L-shell value MLT Magnetic Local Time of the event location, in hours from 0 to 24. MLAT2 Magnetic latitude of the event location, in degrees. f_1 Array of minimum frequency for the identified chorus elements in this event, in Hz. f_2 Array of maximum frequency for the same chorus elements, in Hz. amp_max Array of maximum amplitudes/intensities for the same chorus elements. Each value corresponds element-by-element to f_1, f_2, and p_dir. p_dir Array of propagation direction labels for the same chorus elements: +1 means northward propagation, and -1 means southward propagation.
