Abstract

Paper XVI asks what fixes the quark generation mass hierarchy left open by Paper XV, and reports a systematic negative result: six candidate mechanisms are tested and ruled out, each for a precise, identifiable structural reason rather than a vague failure to match data. A new group-theoretic theorem, the arc-segment energy partition of the trefoil, and direct gradient-flow experiments on the corrected QH=3 construction together sharpen the open problem considerably. Six ruled-out mechanisms, each with a specific cause (1) The 96 φ-valued vertices of the 600-cell broken under 2I → 2T fail on three independent grounds: no normal-subgroup structure, wrong order of magnitude, and a category mismatch between combinatorial and dynamical quantities. (2) The three 1-dimensional irreps of 2T cannot supply a generation label independent of colour, because the same unique outer automorphism permutes both triples simultaneously. (3) Varying the SU(3) WZW level has no McKay-consistent embedding beyond k = 1, since the central-charge match c = 6 = 3×2 underlying the entire QH=3 embedding holds only there. (4) The quotient 2T/Q8 ≅ ℤ3 is a genuine structure independent of colour, but its three cosets split as one distinguished element plus a conjugate pair — wrong shape for an ordered three-generation ladder. (5) Paper V’s proved, generation-universal colour level shift δn(C) = 1/2 is real but insufficient: the residual gap to measured masses is not monotonic in generation index for down-type quarks, ruling out any smooth per-generation correction layered on top of it. (6) Paper V’s integer-exact ratio formula mq/mℓ(g) = exp(nqπ/9), built on the proved incommensurability of π and ln φ, rests on exactly one independently derived input (the strange-quark E8 Coxeter coincidence ms = 13); the remaining five assignments are fixed by that input together with the known mass ordering via a monotonicity argument, reproducing masses with errors of 26%–70%. Colour exclusion theorem: Aut(ᴸ̂8) = {1} A seventh investigation establishes the first positive result: the colour ℤ3 automorphism σ does not extend to any automorphism of 2I, and consequently every QH=2 configuration is a colour singlet (Theorem thm:colour_exclusion). The Dynkin-diagram formulation is transparent: Aut(Ê8) = {1}, while the colour ℤ3 is the non-trivial graph automorphism of Ê6. Together with the ADE completion from Paper XVII, this establishes the full sector hierarchy: ℤ2 ↔ Â1 (QH=1, neutrino), 2I ↔ Ê8 (QH=2, charged lepton), 2T ↔ Ê6 (QH=3, baryon): colour is the output of the 2I → 2T symmetry breaking, not an input available before it. String tension, junction energy, and one-loop RG running The chameleon-sector scalar and the Hopf profile function are proved to be the same field under an explicit map, resolving a potential obstruction to computing σ. The Y-junction arms lie off the trefoil tube (Proposition prop:arms_off_curve), so σ is not accessible from existing tube integrals; both its total σtot = 5392.1 and the junction excess ΔE∪/Ebaryon = 6.9×10−8 are determined, ruling out Y-junction geometry as a source of generation dependence. One-loop, multi-threshold RG running of the colour-shift predictions from ΛUV to the PDG comparison scale gives a 0.09% match for the strange quark and systematic, generation-growing undershoots for all five others — consistent with a missing confinement-specific dynamical contribution. The self-consistent αs(ΛUV) from Paper V agrees to 0.3% with the PDG-anchored value and does not change the residual pattern. Corrected QH=3 construction and gradient-flow landscape The existing numerical solver contains a forced π phase discontinuity at every crossing, carrying gradient energy that diverges under mesh refinement (Proposition prop:divergent_energy). A complex-doublet superposition ansatz (combining each strand’s own Hopf doublet in ℂ2 before projecting to S2) removes the divergence (Theorem thm:s3_bounded_energy) but yields QH=0 — traced to a missing poloidal (χ) winding in the underlying single-nearest-point phase θ = 3t. A corrected per-strand construction supplying Φi = χi + 3ti within each strand’s own doublet, built on a holonomy-compensated Bishop frame (holonomy −63.019°), is smooth at all three crossings, has bounded gradient energy, and is confirmed by direct Whitehead-integral computation to carry QH=3 (Theorem thm:perstrand_charge_three). Gradient-flow minimisation from this construction on a 1923 grid (h = 0.05) gives Kmin ≈ 2294 (Phase 1 exit, step ≈840), followed by a Phase 2 (2+1) lobe-splitting event in which one colour flux tube is shed while the diquark system remains bound. Arc-segment energy partition and jet coplanarity prediction Visual and analytic inspection of the gradient-flow energy-density field reveals a 12-site fraying pattern in three 𝒵3-related categories: three crossing vertices (maximum curvature κ = 0.399, z = +r0, tangent exactly horizontal), three midpoint torsion-twist sites (minimum curvature, z = 0), and three outer-lobe distal sites (z = 0, d = 3.626 from adjacent crossings). A-segments (midpoint → crossing, 90°) carry 79% of total J4 flux; B-segments (crossing → midpoint, 30°) carry 21%. Because the tangent at each crossing lies exactly in the z = +r0 plane, energy ejected at the primary B-segment departure zones propagates in that common plane: all three primary jets from a QH=3 baryon are coplanar by construction, giving zero intrinsic acoplanarity at the topological level. This is a parameter-free geometric prediction consistent with LEP symmetric three-jet event measurements. The recurring lesson is that the lepton sector’s hierarchy is fixed dynamically, not combinatorially, and the quark tower level nq(g) will likewise require a dynamical matching condition specific to the QH=3 condensate coupling — not a shortcut through the representation theory of 2T ⊂ 2I. The string-tension energy σ · 3R0 is the most promising candidate for that derivation, being qualitatively absent from the lepton sector rather than merely quantitatively different.
