Abstract

Empirical Pulse Model for Near-Fault Ground Motions This repository contains the MATLAB code accompanying the following paper: Chen, G., Chian, S. C., Beer, M., & Wei, S. (2026). Empirical pulse model for near-fault ground motion considering magnitude, distance, and site characteristics. Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering. If you use this code in your research, please cite the above publication, together with the corresponding references for the pulse identification algorithm where appropriate. 1. Pulse Identification ipgm Pulse identification function based on the method proposed in: Chen, G., Liu, Y., & Beer, M. (2023). Identification of near-fault multi-pulse ground motion. Applied Mathematical Modelling, 117, 609–624. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apm.2023.01.002 ipgm_VariousModel Pulse identification function developed in this study. Compared with the original ipgm algorithm, this function identifies pulse-like ground motions with a wider range of pulse shapes using the generalized empirical pulse model proposed in the paper. test_ipgm_VariousModel Example script demonstrating the use of ipgm_VariousModel. 2. PEERData This dataset contains the processed PEER NGA-West2 database used in this study. The variables included are listed below. No. Variable Description 1 RSN Record Sequence Number (RSN) in the PEER NGA-West2 database. 2 Magnitude Earthquake moment magnitude from the PEER NGA-West2 database. 3 Dclt Closest distance from the PEER NGA-West2 database. 4 Vs30 Vs30 from the PEER NGA-West2 database. 5 peak_direction_Tp Orientation (rotated from the H1 component) corresponding to the maximum pulse period (Tp), referred to as the peak direction of Tp. 6 Max_Tp Pulse period (Tp) of the identified pulse in the peak direction of Tp. 7 Vp_at_MaxTp Peak velocity (Vp) of the identified pulse in the peak direction of Tp. 8 Nc_at_MaxTp Number of cycles (Nc) of the identified pulse in the peak direction of Tp. 9 Phi_at_MaxTp Phase angle (φ) of the identified pulse in the peak direction of Tp. 10 Er_at_MaxTp Energy ratio (Er) between the identified pulse component and the original ground motion in the peak direction of Tp. 11 rho_at_MaxTp Pearson correlation coefficient (ρ) between the identified pulse part and the fitted pulse model in the peak direction of Tp.
