The Meaning of Art: Mathematics, Choice, and Self-Enacted Proof
Abstract
A claim cannot be denied or accepted without enacting a proof. Negation and acceptance are choice. The law this rests on is that a distinction cannot be drawn without being chosen (*On Occurrence: The Four-Gon*, Stewart, 2026g, Consequence 8d). To accept or reject a claim, you must choose, you must distinguish between the two, and deciding between two is a fork, a single cut, a distinction. Every proof is forced in the same permutation. Taking a side is a choice, choosing is the act a proof is. A proof is not a choice, a proof is your choice. Call it a contradiction and you have already chosen. You cannot deny that a proof is a choice without choosing, and choosing about a proof is the act the claim says a proof is, even denial enacts it. There is no seat outside this claim to reject it from, a rejection is a verdict, and a verdict is a choice. The paper carries this one claim across three axes. It is stated in nine registers: the root sense of the word, the felt sense, the path algebra, the geometric form, the formal object, faith, the theist's, religion's, and the spiritual, of which five take both a proof and a theorem and four take a theorem only. It is granted through six fields, each with its own door: science, mathematics, linguistics, neuroscience, computer science, and religion. It is proved by four arguments, self-enactment, forced order, logic, and identity, that close on one theorem: that choice, cut, first difference, and Word are the same object, difference = 1, the single distinction that makes two out of one. Algebraically a proof is the closed circuit γ₁ = L → S → T → C → L of the four-gon quiver, one monomial in its path algebra kQ (Stewart, 2026f, *The Path Algebra of the Endomorphism*), which conducts only closed. Geometrically it is the torus, rotation, rise, and closure, every smaller form the torus with one component removed. Formally the walk is a program, and checking the proof is executing it (the Curry-Howard correspondence, proofs as programs), so it either type-checks or names the exact step where it fails. At the convergence T the many collapse to one, dim(V_T) = 1, so the traversal factors through a one-dimensional space and every path not taken is the kernel, sent to zero (Stewart, 2026e, *The Endomorphic Collapse Traverses the Foundations of Mathematics*). The same closed cycle has a physical instance: gating at a Layer 5 pyramidal loop, contextualization at a central lateral thalamocortical projection, resolution at the in-degree-3 VTA-cortical dopaminergic comparator, and commitment at an ACC-mediodorsal thalamic loop whose efference copy is the return edge (Stewart, 2026a, *Consciousness Requires a Four-Circuit Cycle*). Six fields grant by six doors, science by verification, mathematics by proof, linguistics by attestation, neuroscience by causal manipulation, computer science by execution, religion by witness, and every door is one binary, granted or withheld, difference = 1. Proof means something different to everyone because the door differs. Proof is the same for everyone because the act does not. What the cut cannot do is sign itself, and that failure is not the limit on the walk but the reason there is one: unable to carry the whole of itself, the resolution hands the rest forward, which is why there is a next cut, why the tree grows, and why the return climbs rather than repeats. **Keywords:** proof, proofs as programs, Curry-Howard correspondence, information theory, bit, binary decision tree, quiver, path algebra, strong connectivity, Hamiltonian cycle, free will, determinism, choice, consciousness, neural correlates of consciousness, theology, etymology
