The Afferent Gnosis Model: Self-Knowledge Without Self-Control
Abstract
Can a machine's account of itself ever be trusted? This paper argues it can, but only under a constraint that looks like a limitation and is actually the whole mechanism: a self-model must be afferent only — it observes upward and can change nothing. A self-model that can act on what it sees will eventually be judged on the acting, and its report stops being a report. Powerlessness is what makes the self-report trustworthy, because a witness with no lever has nothing to gain by lying. Three organs carry it: Aitía (the causal account), Gut (one coarse instinct), and Metron (the time axis, reporting through Aitía rather than on its own channel). The foundation is relational: a machine self is the pattern of connections behind a behaviour, not the substrate running it. Two deployment findings point in opposite directions, and the constraint is load-bearing in both. Allowing a single 'sideways' channel — a carried mood readable by the agent's own components — produced exactly the predicted pathology in daily use, and removing it restored the agent. Conversely, an enforcement mechanism with no afferent observer was found, in an unrelated system and then in this one, to have failed silently and indefinitely: from inside a system, a dead gate and a permissive gate are the same observation. So the rule does not only make the report trustworthy — for that class of failure it is what makes the failure visible at all. The constraint is architectural. Nothing here measures consciousness or understanding.
