Software and data for journal article "Snow what? Strengths and limitations of different snow products in Western U.S. mountains"
Abstract
This archive includes the software and intermediate datasets used to evaluate snow products over the Western U.S. Mountains, as detailed in the journal article "Snow what? Strengths and limitations of different snow products in Western U.S. mountains" (Water Resources Research, 2026). The code used to generate the nine figures for the paper is in the tar archive SnowWhat_paper_software.tar.gz. URLs for the original SWE product data sources are provided both in the paper's Data Statement and in the list below. All SWE product data were regridded to a common grid before analysis and figure generation. The resulting regridded datasets are provided in tar archive SnowWhat_paper_data.tar.gz. This is the list of original sources for each SWE data set. The ASO 2016-19 Colorado ASO data was acquired from https://nsidc.org/data/data-access-tool/ASO_50M_SWE/versions/1 while the 2021 ASO data originated from https://data.airbornesnowobservatories.com/. The California and Washington ASO data were acquired from the following NASA Earthdata website (Wilson, 2025) at https://search.earthdata.nasa.gov/search/granules?p=C3256023791-NSIDC_CPRD&pg[0][v]=f&pg[0][gsk]=-start_date. CONUS404 were acquired from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) website at https://gdex.ucar.edu/datasets/d559000/#. ERA5-Land data were acquired from the Climate Data Store at https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/datasets/reanalysis-era5-land?tab=overview. GLDAS and WLDAS data were acquired from the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center at https://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/datasets?keywords=GLDAS and https://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/datasets?keywords=WLDAS, respectively.SPIReS data were acquired from https://snow.ucsb.edu/products/SPIRES/MODIS/WUS/. UA 4 km were acquired from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) data archive at https://daacdata.apps.nsidc.org/pub/DATASETS/nsidc0719_SWE_Snow_Depth_v1/ and the 800 m data were acquired from https://climate.arizona.edu/data/UA_SWE/DailyData_800m/. SNODAS data were acquired from the NSIDC data archive at https://nsidc.org/data/g02158/versions/1. WUS-SR data were acquired from the NASA Earthdata website via the NSIDC archive at https://nsidc.org/data/wus_ucla_sr/versions/1
