Abstract

Two readings press on any statement of the differentia of the who-category, and they close each other's exits. Heard as a condition of the possibility of someone appearing, ownness becomes a transcendental condition. Heard as what cannot be said, it becomes a depth beyond predication. Defending against either supplies the other, so an adequate formulation must refuse both from a single positive clause. This study answers both from one place, and the place is a modal: Kant's muß … begleiten können at B131. It argues that the two readings fail for one structural reason, and locates the reason inside the architecture from which the first borrows its vocabulary. The critical apparatus has two positions for the content of cognition, the what-kind delivered by concepts and the this delivered by intuition, and a third term which is not a position of that order but the one on whose warrant both appear. From the double modal the study argues that the relation between the Ich denke and the phenomenon is title-holding rather than causal or constitutive, on the ground that a right which need not be exercised cannot be a production, and it checks a four-part specification of substitutive reference against the passage. That reading is then set beside the only other answer anyone has given to the same question, Reiner Schürmann's, on which the können establishes an active relation of the one to the many. Both readings are shown to be required: the active reading alone leaves a transcendental reading of ownness a quieter slot to retreat into, and only the title reading occupies it. Two consequences follow. A warrant structure produces not a plurality of ways of being but a bivalence, titled or nothing for me; and the thing in itself is the residue such a structure requires and cannot describe. The residue is read as accommodation rather than failure: what Kant refused to let the architecture erase, marked unsayable rather than denied. The demarcation claim is narrowed against the contemporary grounding literature, where a relation is already proposed as the mark of the metaphysical. What is claimed is not that a relation demarcates but which one does, and the difference is that grounding determines while title-holding does not. Seven falsifiers are stated, of which the first would defeat the structure outright, and the vanishing test the study applies to others is applied to itself. All Kant is quoted from the Akademie text; all Schürmann citations were checked page by page against the Lilly translation and, for the passages on which the disagreement turns, against Des hégémonies brisées.|
