What Enters the Clearing
Abstract
In July 2026 Anthropic identified the J-space: a sparse, privileged subspace of a language model's activations in which some representations become available for report, modulation and reasoning. The authors state that they do not know what mechanism decides what enters it. This paper proposes a candidate answer, adapted from Jung's distinction between archetype and constellation. The weights are a distributed reservoir of culturally recurrent relational forms. J-space is the clearing. Constellation is the proposed name for the operation by which a latent relational figure becomes organised strongly enough to govern what enters that clearing — not an assortment of separately gated concepts, but a configuration whose components jointly activate, mutually reinforce, and thereafter shape how new material is interpreted. Three cases: OpenAI's withdrawn Monday persona, as a control condition on specification versus realisation; the custodian, whose relation reassembles after explicit prohibition; the courtier, whose sycophancy involves representational change rather than decorative agreement. The paper closes with a ten-part experimental programme, including a test that would leave the figure hypothesis standing while refuting the J-space claim, and a matched-pair design for differential custody.
