Abstract

An Excel workbook that computes Cronbach's alpha and a full item analysis using nothing but the standard spreadsheet functions — no add-in, no macro, no statistical package. Paste the item columns into the yellow cells and the number of respondents and items is detected automatically; the Item Analysis sheet then reports, for each item, the corrected item–total correlation, the value alpha would take if the item were dropped, and a flag naming the problem when there is one. It is written for students who must report the reliability of a scale before they have installed statistical software, and for courses in which that software comes later. The formulas are visible in the cells, so the procedure can be followed rather than trusted. The computational procedure follows a published Japanese blog article, cited in full in the workbook and the README; the item analysis, the automatic detection of k and n, the diagnostic flags and the draft write-up sentence are additions.
