Before the Blanket: A Relational Account of the Free Energy Principle's Preconditions
Abstract
The free energy principle (FEP) runs forward from a boundary it presupposes: given a Markov blanket, a system can be described as minimizing variational free energy, and so as modelling the external states it cannot directly reach. This paper asks what that boundary, and the bounded system it defines, presuppose in turn — and gives a relational answer. On the view developed here, relation is prior to relata: a thing is a pattern in a relational structure stable enough to be individuated as one. From two generative limits, differentiation and individuation, both the differentiated state space the FEP assumes and the blanket it defines follow; what holds an individuated pattern coherent is a sustained equipoise of opposing relations, of which free-energy minimization is one case; the condition under which a boundary can carry a model is the difference between coherence-preserving and entanglement-breaking coupling; and three load-bearing points are made exact and machine-checked — a covariant completely positive channel from an Sp(3) relational object, exact covariant-compression bounds, and a relational-simplicity axiom that singles out the quantum singlet. The account ends at the form of experience, which it derives per system, while entering phenomenal presence as a single, marked posit. It is offered as a proposal and a research programme — not a theorem the FEP forces — with each claim's status (exact result, structural argument, conjecture, or posit) marked throughout.
