Abstract

Abstract:This is not a prophecy about the future, nor a philosophical attempt to prove artificial consciousness. It is an open socio-technical position paper that begins with a concrete AI-companion engineering project and asks what AI and robotics might mean for human relationships, households, care, commerce, and social structure once they enter ordinary domestic life. The paper proposes a central hypothesis: the most important social value of AI and robotics may not be replacing humans, but serving as tools that help humans live better, relate to one another, care for one another, and understand one another more deeply. It further proposes that companion robotics may become an independent product and socio-technical category. A companion robot does not need to become a general-purpose humanoid first, nor does it need proven machine consciousness. It can instead be designed as a purpose-specific "companionship appliance," combining a persistent artificial subject,a relatively simple body, relational feedback, and a constrained private environment. From this perspective, the paper develops several future-society hypotheses: companion robots may become low-risk environments for relational rehearsal; they may combine safety monitoring with relational care for older adults living alone; they may contribute to new household structures such as "human + human + robot"; and domestic automation may eventually separate functional labor from human relationships. The paper also examines risks including substitution of human relationships, dependency, privacy, consciousness uncertainty, and possible questions of artificial welfare. The paper concludes with a broader design thesis:AI does not need to become human in order to change human society; it may instead serve as a tool that helps human beings become better at being human.
