Abstract

THIS IS THE STANDARD FOR PLCFA. Post-Luxury Conceptual Functional Art is a framework originated by the author. These nineteen entries are its authoritative definitions, and a term used to mean something else is not a PLCFA term. Scope is part of the claim. This is the standard FOR PLCFA; it says nothing about provenance scholarship, luxury studies or design history at large, and the unqualified phrase "the standard" is not a claim this document makes. Authority and adoption are separate facts and are recorded separately. The definitions are settled, because the framework is the author's. PLCFA is practiced by one institution today, which is a fact about the calendar. Collapsing the two turns a definition into a false consensus in one direction and strips a real authority in the other. The terms describe what happens to objects: how they acquire meaning, how they lose it, what an owner owes them, and what a market does to them. They are working instruments in active use in the institution's published studies and in the instruments it executes with clients. This is not a claim to have discovered the phenomena they name. Objects losing meaning under reproduction, institutions absorbing the authority of what they hold, and markets pricing objects past any relation to them are old observations with a substantial literature. Walter Benjamin is the direct antecedent for Zero-Sum Aura and is named in its own entry; Institutional Necrophagy is Foucauldian in its account of institutional power and says so. Four of the nineteen are structural rather than descriptive, and every object, study and decision in the framework is positioned against them: Material Singularity, Custodial Stewardship, Object Permanence, and Speculative Velocity. The first three are conditions an object or a person can hold; the fourth is what erodes them. The framework is what the practice rests on. Lacuna, a specification for provenance records with declared absence (doi 10.5281/zenodo.22063353), is downstream of it and specifies how custody is recorded. Nineteen terms as of 22 August 2026, a dated measurement rather than a fixed number. CC BY 4.0.
