What Is Gravity? Why a World with History Must Gravitate
Abstract
General relativity is our successful theory of gravitational geometry. It tells us how freely falling bodies move, how light propagates, how clocks redshift, how neighbouring trajectories acquire tidal acceleration, how gravitational waves travel, and how matter and geometry evolve together. Yet its equations begin after a prior question has already been answered in nature: why must there be one public deformation read by bodies, light, clocks, phases, and baselines at all? The Grammar of Time (GT) reverses the dependency order. It begins neither with objects inside spacetime nor with a metric waiting to be curved. Total dispersion leaves no attributable return; identical return adds no predictive distinction. Consequential history therefore has the non-degenerate form of non-identical restitution (NIR): a difference returns with certified provenance and changes what can happen next. The Mother Cascade makes the returned residue the condition of the next continuation, D′ₙ → Dₙ₊₁, while the minimal future-sufficient carrier K* retains exactly the distinctions that an admitted future can still expose. The word universe then carries a decisive logical commitment. In a complete world no external spectator may store or coordinate future-active differences. In a genuinely single world a world-level restitution cannot be erased inside any proper continuation quotient. Let q_pub: K* → P* be the independently fixed, noncollapsed public quotient under predeclared descriptive, frame, gauge, and calibrated instrumental equivalences. If the least continuation congruence generated by a World-NIR pair (k, k′) is universal, then q_pub(k) ≠ q_pub(k′); otherwise the proper public quotient would collapse. The descended public response profile is therefore necessarily different, and every nontrivial public sector is answerable to the same restituted contrast under some admitted continuation. This yields the Necessary Premetric Gravity Theorem. A complete, historically intelligible, nonfragmented world necessarily possesses a nonzero endogenous deformation of its public continuability. That is the premetric gravitational role: the world cannot continue as though its own history had not occurred. Gravity is not added as a further ontological premise. Source control, support separation, held-out cross-prediction, nuisance removal, and relational non-reclosure then certify that the familiar physical phenomenon occupies the necessary role; experiments calibrate its terminal form. The total minimal public carrier is canonical only up to predictive isomorphism. This is uniqueness of the gravitational role, not a claim that gravity is scalar, rank one, single-component, or represented by only one terminal field. Metric, connection, curvature, Lorentz signature, dimension, c, G, Λ, attraction, and Einstein–Λ dynamics arise later under explicit reconstruction, selection, and calibration conditions. Spacetime may be exact as a representation and still be too late to contain its own origin: it is the geometric record of the necessary deformation. The paper states the theorem and its proof, answers fourteen foundational questions, positions the result against neighbouring reconstruction programmes, and isolates the open empirical boundary at the terminal branch rather than at gravity’s existence.
