Abstract

In our research report Cultural transmission vectors of essential knowledge and skills among Tsimane forager-farmers, we examine reported patterns of culture transmission contributing to 92 essential skills among a sample of 421 Tsimane forager-horticulturalists. We collected data for the study using a Skills Survey to identify vectors and types of influence responsible for the transmission of 92 skills important among Tsimane (Schniter et al. 2015). Here we provide the anonymized data for Schniter et al.’s 2022 study (as both a .csv file and as a .sav file) as well as both code and outputs (as an .spv file) for statistical analyses performed using IBM SPSS Version 24. For additional details about the Skills Survey see Schniter, E., Gurven, M., Kaplan, H. S., Wilcox, N. T., & Hooper, P. L. (2015). Skill ontogeny among Tsimane forager‐horticulturalists. American journal of physical anthropology, 158(1), 3-18. Note on correction (this version): A data-preparation error in the previously posted dataset has been corrected for this version. Four of the 92 skills carried a neighboring skill’s attribute values in the previous version, the result of a fill-down error that overwrote each affected skill's row with the row above it. The error was identical in the two earlier files (TransmissionData.csv and TransmissionData.sav, the same data in two formats) and affected the skill-attribute columns (description, difficulty, and the vanishing flag) for these four skills: · Skill 7 (make canoe) carried skill 6's (make arrows) row: difficulty -0.492 instead of 2.300, and vanishing flagged 1 instead of 0. · Skills 11, 12, and 13 (bass drum, violin, snare drum) each carried skill 10's (make flute) row: difficulty -0.119 instead of 1.830, 1.318, and 1.348, and vanishing flagged 0 instead of 1. The remaining 88 skills were unaffected and match the published appendix. Corrected values are provided in this revised version. The correction does not affect the findings reported in the associated article. A 92-row corrected skill-attribute table, consistent with the published appendix, is included in this version.
