Artificial Intelligence and Civilizational Transformation
Abstract
This work analyses artificial intelligence as a factor in contemporary civilizational transformation, examining its impact on the human being, on society and on Earth in the era of synthetic decision. The central argument is that the integration of AI systems into people's lives, into institutions, the economy, education, security and the management of resources produces a systemic change in the relationship between the human being, society and Earth. This transformation does not consist merely in the automation of tasks, but in the emergence of an artificial cognitive layer that filters information, generates content, recommends options, assists decisions and reconfigures the way in which reality is perceived and administered. Conceptually, the work proposes the notion of the cognitively assisted Earth. The concept describes the state in which AI systems become part of the operational environment of human and institutional life, simultaneously influencing decision-making, production, education, security, resource consumption and environmental protection. AI is treated as a socio-technical system, dependent on material infrastructures: energy, water, minerals, data centres, chips, networks, data and human labour. The work also proposes the relational notation Humanᴬᴵ and its organisational extension Orgᴬᴵ, by which are designated the person and the organisation whose capabilities, vulnerabilities and decision-making processes are mediated by artificial systems. In this reading, capability, vulnerability and autonomy are modified simultaneously, and the direction of that modification depends on the competence of the user, on the quality of the relationship, on the degree of delegation and on the mechanisms of verification and accountability. The methodology is qualitative and interdisciplinary, based on conceptual analysis, documentary analysis, comparative synthesis and prospective scenarios. The general conclusion is that the fundamental question does not concern the existence of the transformation produced by AI, but its character: the extent to which it remains intelligible, governable, equitable and compatible with the material limits of Earth.
