Abstract

Abstract:Frank Pierrepont Graves' foundational historical volume systematically traces the evolution of educational theories, institutions, and practices from the 18th century through the early 20th century. The text highlights pivotal educational movements, including the rise of democratic public schooling, scientific approaches to pedagogy, and the influence of major philosophers like Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, and Herbart. Graves contrasts European educational developments with their adaptation and transformation within the American school system. Ultimately, the book illustrates how modern education evolved from rigid, dogmatic traditionalism into a dynamic, student-centered, and scientifically guided social institution designed to serve the needs of modern democratic industrial societies.
