Comparison of C-K Theory and the Binary Partition Ideation Framework:C-K理論と二分発想法(BPI Framework)の比較
Abstract
This paper compares C-K Theory and the Binary Partition Ideation Framework (BPI Framework), focusing on how each approach conceptualizes the “unknown” and constructs a search space for novel concept generation. C-K Theory develops unknown design objects through the interaction and expansion of Concept (C) and Knowledge (K), while the BPI Framework begins by observing the current cognitive field from a "meta-perspective" and defining it as a bounded cognitive set S. Its complement, Sᶜ, is treated as a conceptual space inaccessible to direct recognition, within which an explorable set N is constructed to enable the generation of concepts outside the existing cognitive set. Using the Mg-CO₂ Mars mission case previously examined through C-K Theory, this paper analyzes the same design context from the perspective of the BPI Framework. The comparison suggests that the two approaches address different stages of novel concept generation and may therefore be understood not as competing theories, but as potentially complementary methodologies.
