Key in the Spiral: Field A13 and the Triadic Structure of Side A of the Phaistos Disc
Abstract
This article examines field A13 on Side A of the Phaistos Disc as a structurally anomalous element. Wolfgang Reczko independently identified the same sector as a small additional field of irregular position and form. If A13 is provisionally removed from the primary field count, the numerical asymmetry between the two sides disappears: Side A and Side B each contain 30 fields. The paper then asks whether the two signs within A13 may encode a principle governing the organization of the remaining sequence. A working interpretation of sign 39 as “three” and sign 11 as “arc” yields a triadic grouping. Applied without reordering the sequence, this produces a 10×3 matrix in which all exact repeated fields on Side A retain the same column position. The result is tested against alternative segmentations, a technical-insertion hypothesis, an immanent-rhythm hypothesis, and the structure of Side B. Akkadian qaštu “bow,” attested in Old Babylonian mathematics as a geometric figure and interpreted in lexical tradition as “arc as a shape,” provides a chronologically relevant parallel for the semantic step proposed for sign 11. The model is a falsifiable structural hypothesis whose most direct independent test is supplied by the other occurrences of sign 39.
