Washington, DC Structural Urban Form Reference Map
Abstract
This standalone cartographic reference map depicts the structural urban form of Washington, DC using Structural Intensity (SI), a reproducible measure combining estimated building-footprint coverage and normalized building height. This is an all-building structural-intensity map: it evaluates built form across building types and does not depict population density or occupancy. Using native Microsoft 2023 Q4 raster cells, the 2025 Census municipal boundary, a fixed SI threshold of 0.007987, and strict 8-neighbor connectivity, the map identifies Washington, DC's Structural Core and separate structural areas, including Georgetown, L’Enfant Plaza–Southwest Waterfront, and Navy Yard–Capitol Riverfront. The map also presents component measurements, minor structural fragments, jurisdictional boundaries, the District’s geographic center, and regional reference geography. Version 1.5 is a cartographic-only revision that improves jurisdictional and contextual labeling, restores water features in Maryland and Virginia, and adds an Airport (DCA) label. Analytical cells, boundaries, measurements, methods, and interpretations remain unchanged. This map accompanies The Structural Urban Form of Washington, DC: A Reproducible Geospatial Research Monograph (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.22307215) and its technical supplement, Structural Intensity: Threshold Validation, Reproducibility, and Cross-City Transferability (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.22667772). This standalone record contains the authoritative and publication-ready edition of the map. Earlier editions embedded in associated monograph or technical-supplement packages are retained as historical publication artifacts and are superseded for current citation and reuse.
