The Power of Starting Where We Are - Mapping Montessori Materials for AI Competency Development - Class Posters
Abstract
This six-page poster set presents the framework of Mapping Montessori Materials for AI Competency Development (Broughton, 2025) in an easily accessible classroom format. The posters were created for the American Montessori Society Innovation Fellowship Think Tank's presentation at The Montessori Event in March 2024, and updated in 2025 for the Think Tank's Innovation Lab: The Future Montessori Classroom, presented at the AMS 65th Anniversary celebrations in Denver. The set distills the book's mapping into one poster for each environment: 0–3, 3–6, 6–12, and 12–18. Each poster names the human competencies identified in current research on the age of artificial intelligence, from pattern recognition and algorithmic thinking foundations to data analysis, ethical considerations, and machine learning foundations, and pairs competencies identified with the familiar Montessori materials and activities that already cultivate it, from grace and courtesy, nesting cups, and the pink tower to timeline work, probability exercises, and hands-on coding. The competencies are acquired asynchronously, allowing each student to develop and refine them at their own pace, based on individual readiness and engagement. A sixth poster, added in 2026, extends the set with the classical vocabulary of the prepared environment. Where the age-band posters use the language of the AI age, this 0–18 page places six terms Montessori educators have always used, seriation, classification, isolation of quality, control of error, one-to-one correspondence, and symbolic abstraction, beside the meaning each already carries for the age of artificial intelligence. The page opens by reframing the word algorithm itself, an ordered way of getting something done, and the Montessori classroom as an environment of living algorithms. The complete glossary for this vocabulary, published as two-part card sets, accompanies the book. The posters are intended for classroom walls, staff rooms, parent education, and teacher preparation, and accompany the full mapping published in the book. No technology is required to develop any competency shown; the posters describe what prepared Montessori environments already do.
